Transport & Logistics: Moving Your Life to Northern Spain
Relocating to the North of Spain is about more than just booking a flight; it’s about transplanting your life. Whether you are moving from the UK, USA, or Canada, getting your household belongings to regions like Asturias, Cantabria or Galicia requires specific logistical planning.
Unlike the sunny southern coast, the North has unique geography and infrastructure. Furthermore, for our clients arriving from outside the EU, navigating the “Transfer of Residence” customs protocols is critical to avoiding heavy import taxes.
The Northern Route: Ports and Logistics
Most general movers will ship your goods to Valencia or Barcelona and truck them across the country. However, we specialize in the North, utilizing the Atlantic hubs to reduce transit time and risk.
Sea Freight (USA & Canada): For clients shipping containers from North America, we prioritize routing through the Port of Bilbao or Gijón. This directs your container straight to the Green Coast, avoiding the long haul across the Spanish interior.
Road & Ferry (UK): For British movers, the most direct route is the ferry connection from Portsmouth or Plymouth into Santander or Bilbao. This minimizes time on the road and reduces wear and tear on your belongings compared to driving down through France.
The "Last Mile" Challenge in Northern Spain
This is where local knowledge counts. The North of Spain is famous for its lush mountains, winding rural roads, and historic stone villages.
A standard 40-foot shipping container simply cannot access many properties in rural Asturias or the Picos de Europa.
We factor in transshipment—moving your goods from the heavy haulage truck to smaller shuttle vans that can navigate narrow lanes and steep driveways—ensuring your furniture arrives at your new door, not stuck at the bottom of the hill.
Customs & Import Duties: The "Transfer of Residence" Exemption
Since Brexit, UK citizens now face the same customs procedures as our American and Canadian clients.
The good news is that you can bring your household goods into Spain tax-free, provided you follow the strict “Transfer of Residence” (ToR) rules.
To qualify for the Franquicia por Cambio de Residencia (Duty-Free Import), you must meet three key criteria:
- The 6-Month Rule: You must have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months prior to moving. (Brand new items in original packaging are subject to 21% VAT).
- The 12-Month Window: You must have lived outside of Spain for at least 12 continuous months prior to arrival, and you must import your goods within 12 months of obtaining your Spanish residency.
- The 1-Year Hold: You cannot sell, rent, or lend these goods for 12 months after they clear customs.
Essential Documentation
Essential Documentation
Getting your container stuck in customs is a nightmare we help you avoid. To clear customs in Bilbao or Santander without paying duties, you will typically need:
- Comprehensive Inventory: A detailed list in Spanish, including estimated values (used value, not replacement).
- Baja Consular: A certificate from the Spanish consulate in your country of origin proving you have deregistered and are moving to Spain.
- Proof of Residency: Your NIE (Foreigner ID number) and the Alta de Padrón (town hall registration) in your new Spanish municipality.
Why Specialist Knowledge Matters
Spain’s customs authorities are bureaucratic, and regional offices in the North can be particularly meticulous.
Incorrect paperwork can lead to your container being held at the port, accruing daily storage fees.
We coordinate with local customs agents in the Northern ports who understand the specific requirements of the Agencia Tributaria.
From advising on how to pack boxes to ensuring your Baja Consular is stamped correctly, we manage the logistics so you can focus on settling into your new green paradise.
